Introduction
Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data. An understanding of statistical methods will help you make decisions more effectively. Statisticians collect and, analyze data to enable the end user to take well informed, factually supported decisions. People in this field recommend the study of statistics because “it’s useful, it’s interesting, it can be combined with other areas of interests in life, it makes use of reasoning skills, it involves working with others, and what may begin quite simply can turn out quite complex, hence it is challenging” •

Nature of Work
Statisticians collect, verify and interpret data and use the same to solve problems in a wide variety of fields Statisticians make use of various methods like questionnaires, surveys and diagnostics tests to study real life Problems in a broad range of disciplines like biology, economics, engineering, medicine, physics, sociology and Psychology they collect data from reliable sources, evaluate it using scientific methods, make use of statistical tools and present their findings in the form of graphs, charts, tables etc. On the basis of their findings they suggest potential applications of the results of their survey and help to find solutions to the problem at hand. They determine whether the existing information is adequate or additional information is required. Then they summarize the information in a useful and informative manner, analyze the available information and finally draw conclusions and make inferences while assessing the risk of an incorrect conclusion. Some of the various areas in which statisticians work are: crime statistics, census statistics, ecological statistics, medical statistics, statistics on job-seekers, film statistics, cricket statistics, market statistics, accident statistics, population statistics, election statistics, state statistics, tourism statistics etc. In all these areas statistician interpret numerical data and explain to the public what the numbers mean and how it can be beneficial. The nature of work that the statistician does depends on his field of work.

Area Nature of Work
Business Today’s business statisticians are in the thick of their company’s initiatives to build products that delight customers and to increase market share and profitability. Their involvement is holistic and runs from product conception to field deployment.
Industry Statisticians are involved in checking the quality of items manufactured, in ‘ T, product development, improvement and marketing. In addition they do Testing , they are also involved in deciding the products to manufacture, how much to charge for them, and to whom the products should be marketed.
Colleges and Universities Statisticians are needed for teaching, statistical research, consulting, , Psychological testing, guidance and counseling. Academic and research statisticians are concerned with the training of students and statistical research if in a chosen specialized field
Government Operations and surveys Statisticians working with the government departments conduct experiments.surveys on consumer prices, fluctuations in the economy, employment patterns, population trends etc and aid in the development of public policy and A ,legislations Statisticians collect information from a carefully specified sample and extend the results to an entire population.
Scientific Research Statisticians work in tandem with other scientists to gauge the feasibility o various experiments. Those working as wildlife statisticians help to collect data on the various animal populations and try to design strategies to protect endangered species
Sports statisticians Sports statisticians collect and analyze sports data like cricket scores, hockey scores, tennis scores etc along with other historical information that commentators refer to when reporting games. These statisticians work for sports teams, associations, private sports, statistic bureaus, sports channels, media etc.
Medical Statistician Statistics is central to most medical research. Medical statisticians help doctors and other medical professionals with their work. The job involves monitoring and surveillance of diseases and health pattern of the sample under study. It involves establishing the cause of disease or the factors associated with disease and death and thereby its prevention. It also involves evaluation of treatment methods and effectiveness of medicines.
Testing new drugs One can trust the safety and efficacy of the drugs one takes because they are extensively tested according to strict guidelines. The results of this testing are carefully reviewed by the world’s leading medical and statistical experts prior to approval for marketing. Without extensive statistical analysis, the implications of scientific data would be less clear, and important information K might be lost. Statisticians are essential in the drug development process ’ because they ensure the validity and accuracy of findings at all stages of drug discovery, development, approval, and marketing.

Fieldwork may be required in some cases and this may involve a lot of traveling for collection of data.

Personal Attributes
Statisticians must have good reasoning ability, persistence and the ability to apply principles to new types of problems. Strong foundation in ‘mathematical statistics’ is a must. Good communications skills are important for prospective statisticians, in order to qualify for many positions in industry where the need to explain technical matters to laymen is common. The person should have strong background in statistical computing as well as should stay updated on recent literature and statistical software. The other traits required are intelligence, creativity, patience, problem-solving skills and an ability to comprehend and take decisions independently. A solid understanding of business and the economy is important for those who plan to work in private industry. Because computers are used extensively for statistical applications, a strong background in computer science is highly recommended. In short, statistics is an intellectually attractive field for people with broad quantitative interests.

Employment opportunities
A qualified statistician will find job opportunities in public sector organizations, financial institutions and in private companies. Colleges and Universities employ statisticians for teaching, statistical research, and consulting. The other reputed organizations employing statisticians include Planning Commission, the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), institutions associated with socio-economic research etc. They may work individually or as part of interdisciplinary teams. The graduation in statistics as the first degree qualifies a person for the options like armed forces, civil services (with statistics as subject), banks etc. The insurance industry provides lot of employment to graduates of statistics. Indian Statistical Service (ISS) – This is for those who are interested in having a hi3 with the government. For this Masters degree is required. Statistics jobs in India exist in the capacities of data interpreters, data analysts and statisticians. Many of the scholars completing statistics courses in India are appointed by educational and research institutes in India and abroad.Statisticians are employees as lecturers, assistant professors or research scholars / officers / Assists.
