Introduction
Hospitality and tourism industry comprises different segments which include food services, lodging, boarding, recreation and travel management. All these segments go hand in hand to attract customers, so that they come and wud money. The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing areas of our economy. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. It offers workers the opportunity to work in multiple areas. This fast growing industry requires a constant, supply of workers and managers who are qualified and trained to fill a wide range of positions. There are many hi3s in the hospitality industry. To be successful in this field you need to have good people skills and be able to cope with an ever changing environment.The industry can be glamorous and exciting and can offer you the chance to travel. Ever changing challenges and exploding job growth the reason the hospitality has thrived for so long. With increasing globalization, hi3 opportunities in this field are not limited within the country but there are chains of hotels which operate internationally providing scope for a hi3 abroad. It is a glamorous profession which has a bright future. With the growth of hotel industry propelled by foreign and domestic tourism and business travel, the demand for well trained quality persormel too has grown impressively.

Nature of work
Depending on the size of the hotel, the departments and duties of the personnel differ. In smaller hotels the main person may oversee everything personally, or they may have a whole team of support staff at large resorts with many services and hundreds of staff. The various departments and their work are listed below.

General Operations The General manager heads this department. He is the in-charge of the coordination and administration of the hotel. This department is responsible for staff management, financial control, provision services, quality control and customer care. The hotel manager’s duties also include setting room rates, establishing standards for housekeeping, food quality, and decoration, approving expenditure and apportioning funds to various departments.
Front office Front office is the main centre of all the maj or activities. The major tasks of this department include providing information, making room reservations and taking care of check-ins and check-outs. The front office staf interfaces directly with the customers. It generates the maximum revenue for the hotel as it sells rooms to the guests.This also includes sub departments like reservation, Bell desk, and Information desk.
House Keeping Housekeeping is the department that deals essentially with cleanliness and all ancillary services attached to it. Its standard plays an important role in the reputation ofthe hotels. This department is responsible for the maintenance and cleanliness of all the rooms, toilets, swimming pools, gymnasium, games arcades and meeting rooms. Horticulture is one of the most important features of housekeeping department which deals with different types of flower arrangement and maintenance of the garden and lawns. This department works toward giving a pleasant look ofthe hotel.
Food and Beverage Food and Beverage department is the hub ofthe hotel industry and it is also responsible for all the food that is prepared and served in a very attractive and pleasing manner to the guests. There are several kinds of food and beverage outlets like restaurants, bars, coffee shops, take aways, banquets etc. It is the second most revenue producing department of the hotel. The two major jobs include Kitchen department which deals with preparation of food, different cuisine has their own kitchen and specialized chefs to work in it. Bakery departments comes under this department and includes preparation of desserts, breads etc. Catering department consists of people who serve food and drinks to the customers in the hotel.
Accounting Department This department deals with both cash and credit transactions, i.e. all the financial transactions like purchase of materials, room tariffs, and other services offered to the guests. This department also compiles information required for budgeting, pricing of food and services and so on. Finance Professionals like Cost and Works accountants are given higher positions in the department. Chief cashier, cash clerk/bill clerk are some ofthe key positions in this department.
Sales and Marketing The main work of this department is to keep in touch with travel agents and tour operators and other potential corporate clients in terms of selling hotel facilities. Sales & Marketing department normally handles advertising and public relations. Their job is to attract the guests to the hotel by offering discounts, freebies, and other attractive combination packages. They also conduct campaigns aimed at special clients highlighting the services and facilities for them.
Engineering / Maintenance Department Qualified engineers are appointed for the maintenance of the building and various machines involved in the premises. They are assisted by trained staff in the electrical and mechanical departments. Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Plumbers, Carpenters etc are employed by this department.
Security department Provides security for the guests and their belongings and employs security officers, and guards for this purpose. Retired Army personnel are usually preferred

Personal Attributes
Hotel Management as a hi3 requires a friendly, helpful, outgoing personality. Different departments have different specific attributes and skill requirements. In general those opting for a hi3 in this field should have good organizational background, good interpersonal skills and strong work commitment and self-discipline. Those who interact directly with guests must be extroverts co-operative, polite and respectful to the guests, having patience to deal with guest grievances, willing to work hard even at odd hours and yet being cheerful. They need to have the ability to plan and prioritize work, multi-task and work quickly especially in “peak hours” with a lot of activity happening around. Not only that, they need to be very conscious about their appearance by dressing neatly, ensuring clean hair and nails, practicing good hygiene habits.

Lots of lucrative and interesting openings are there for hotel management graduates in various fields like: Hotel & Restaurant Services, Clubs and casinos management, Catering departments of Airlines, Railways, Banks, Armed Forces, Shipping companies, Cruise ships etc. Hospital administration and catering, Hotel and Tourism Associations, Institutional Management supervising canteens in college, schools, factories, company guest houses etc.

How to Enter
After 10+2 with any stream a student can do an under graduate programme in Hospitality management.

Major Entrance Exam
1) Council for Hotel Management& Catering Technology www.nchmct.org Candidates are called for an objective type written entrance examination called IEE (All India Joint Entrance Exam) of 200marks and 3 hrs duration held in April at the specified centers which tests the candidate’s ability in:
(a) Reasoning and Logical Deduction (30 marks)
(b) Numerical Ability and Scientific Aptitude (30 marks)
(c) General Knowledge (30 marks)
(d) English Language (80 marks)
(e) Aptitude for service sector (30 marks)
Qualified candidates are called for interview which is held at Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai and Lucknow.

2) Centre of Learning and Development (OCLD)
Application process for these programmes begins in February each year. The programmes commence in June. The ofthe admission in undergraduate courses includes three rounds of selection test.
Round 1 :Candidates are divided into groups of 15-20 participants and are taken through a round of activities and which evaluates the candidates on grooming, poise and spoken English.
Round 2 : Short-listed candidates from Round l are taken for a one-on-one meeting with a panel comprising of OCLD faculty. Here, the evaluator checks the candidates’ aptitude for hospitality and gets to know them better.
Round 3 : Short-listed candidates from Round 2 will be invited for counselling and an orientation in May.

Institute of Hotel Management
(Taj group) Selection Procedure Applicants will be required to take an Objective written test, which will be of 90 minutes duration and will carry 100 marks. Questions will pertain to Abstract Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Numerical Reasoning, and General Knowledge
To qualify the written test, candidates will require to score at least 45% marks. Candidates short-listed after the examination will be required to appear for a Group Discussion and a Personal Interview at a later date.
Group Discussion will be of 50 marks and Personal interview of 100 marks. The Personal Interview will be assessed on the following five criteria: Communication Skill, Alertness and Analytical Skill, General Awareness, Warmth and Service Orientation, Personality

Travel and Tourism is one ofthe world’s largest foreign exchange earners among industries, providing employment directly to millions of people worldwide, directly and indirectly through many associated service industries. A very wide industry, it includes Government tourism departments, Immigration and customs services, travel agencies, airlines, tour operators, hotels etc and many associated service industries such as airline catering, guides interpreters, tourism promotion and sales etc.
With increasing worldwide interest in travel, and with the Indian Government’s encouragement of its activities, this industry is undergoing massive expansion and improvement. The successful marketing and positioning of India as an attractive tourist destination, coupled with liberal Visa policies, better aviation, airports etc has boosted general tourism and it is a very happening industry today.
This forecasts a bright future for all those who choose to make a hi3 of travel and tourism. Young people with drive and a capacity for hard work can rise to top positions very quickly in travel and tourism or even head their own agencies. A job in the industry gives good retums as well as perks including opportunity to see and stay in many top locales at low charges.

Nature of work
Work in the travel and tourism industry is essentially concerned with providing services for people who are away from home, on business or holiday. Travel can be leisure travel involving package tours, pilgrim travel, and adventure travel etc or purely business. Work at every functional level in the industry involves dealing directly with people. Travel agents assess the needs of tourists and businessmen and help them make the best possible travel arrangements from the many travel options available. Also, many major cruise lines, resorts, and specialty travel groups use travel agents to promote travel packages to the millions of people who travel every year. Travel company personnel must be up-to-date on current rules and regulations and documentation required, in areas like cargo, ticketing and passports, visas etc. so as to correctly advise their clients, and to take care ofthe paperwork when necessary. Besides this, all tourism staff in marketing, counter sales, or guide services, should be knowledgeable about the places their clients visit, in terms of general background, how to get there connections by air, rail and road and the facilities available.

Departments and their Nature of Work
Ticketing This department is involved in reservations and arrangements of tickets to travel. They book passages for air, rail, sea and road travel, arrange hotel or other stay reservations, hire cars and coaches.
Travel Agencies Travel agents assess the needs of tourists and businessmen and help them make the best possible arrangements from the many travel options available. They are basically retailers, who plan and sell trips to iduals or groups. All travel agents take on both international and domestic bookings. Some specialise in areas, business trips, group tours or conferences. They deal with almost everything connected with travel including shortest route to the destination, travel mode, the important documents that will be required (visa, passport, certificates etc.), suitable places to stay, current exchange rates, tourist attractions to visit, climate and Travel will plan the trip keeping in mind the clients’ preferences, budgets and special needs.
Operators Tour operators deal in travel and destination management. Tour operators organize conducted to the various tourist spots and manage the travel and stay of the tourists. They put together and sell package. These could be for individuals or groups and include incoming tourists from abroad, outbound tours to destinations or domestic travelers. Tour operators could offer special interest packages that range from or wlogy to golf, wildlife to astrology.
Transpot Operators and Cargo handlers besides airlines, travel facilities include rail services, coach operators, hire companies. Etc. Whatever means tourists use to travel from one place to another – by air, road, railway, comes under Travel and tourism. Tourist use almost all these travel facilities.Cargo handling deals with and recovery of Cargo from destinations connected by air, rail or roads. They deal with all the formalities to this matter and ensure safe transportation of concerned cargo.

Personal Attributes
Commrnunication and presentation skills are essential in the industry where service to the customer is importance.An outgoing, friendly personality, ability to handle people, verbal fluency, and for languages will be advantageous to be successful in this field. One should also have an up-to- knorwledge of available facilities and services in the field. In the administrative or managerial level, ability, an ability to make quick and accurate decisions, solve problems, work effectively team will be essential. This also calls for high level of patience, hard work, responsibility, good skills, creative abilities and ability to handle emergencies.

Employment opportunities
Opportunities exist in both the public and the private sector in this industry.ln the public you can work in the Central and State Directorates and Departments of tourism. In the private on the other hand you can secure a job in a travel agency, hotel, airline, transport agency or cargo since this industry is a relatively new one, there are less experienced individuals and one can more up the ladder fast and establish your own agency after a few years of experience.

Various Career Options Available are:

Tourism Department : Here one can work as reservation and counter staff, sales and marketing staff tour planners, tour guides, information assistants and officers in the Directorate and Department of tourism. Guides are required too and they are divided into three categories namely regional, state and local.
Transport : Transport refers Air, railways, road and sea transport. Road transport: Coaches and tourist cars provide scope for self employment or, being part of a chain of companies.
Airlines: This sector of the travel and tourism industry is in great demand.Traffic assistants, reservation and counter staff air hostess & flight pursuers, sales and marketing staff and people to provide customer services are all required. Time share companies: A companies these companies own/manage holiday resorts with time shares owned by different members of these companies. One has the option of working with resort owning companies or time share exchange companies like RCI.
Holiday consultants : This is a relatively new hi3 option in the travel and tourism industry. These professional provide all the information to their clients. They sell the holiday, plan the ininerary, make the travel plan, book the tickets and provide all the other details which are required.
