Unit I
Interference of light
• Michelson‟s Interferometer: Production of circular & straight line fringes, Determination of
wavelength of light. Determination of wavelength separation of two nearby wavelengths.
• Newton‟s rings and measurement of wavelength of light.
• Interference of Optical technology: elementary idea of anti-reflection coating and
interference filters.
Unit II
Polarization of light
• Plane circular and elliptically polarized light on the basis of electric (light) vector, Malus law.
• Double Refraction: Qualitative description of double refraction phase retardation plates,
quarter and half wave plates, construction, working and use of these in production and
detection of circular and elliptically polarized light.

4CH6.3(ME) – NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCES
Unit – I
Introduction: Energy scene of supply and demand in India and the world, energy consumption in various sectors, potential of non-conventional energy resources. Detailed study of the following sources with particular reference to India.
Solar Energy: Solar radiation and its measurement, limitations in the applications of Solar Energy, Solar collectors – types, and constructional details. Solar water heating, applications of Solar Energy for heating, drying, space cooling, water desalination, solar concentrators, photovoltaic power generation using silicon cells.
Unit – II
Bio-Fuels: Importance, combustion, pyrolysis and other thermo chemical processes for biomass utilization. Alcoholic fermentation, anaerobic digestion for biogas production.
Unit – III
Wind Power: Principle of energy from wind, windmill construction and operational details and electricity generation and mechanical power production.
Tidal Power: Its meaning, causes of tides and their energy potential, enhancement of tides, power generation from tides and problems. Principles of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) analysis and sizing of heat exchangers for OTEC.
Unit – IV
Geothermal Energy: Geo technical wells and other resources dry rock and hot aquifer analysis , harnessing geothermal energy resources.

5EC5 MICROWAVE ENGINEERING-I
UNIT 1: WAVE GUIDES:Introduction of Microwaves and their applications. Rectangular
Waveguides, Solution of Wave equation in TE and TM modes. Power transmission and Power losses. Excitation of modes in Rectangular waveguides, circular waveguides:
Basic idea of TE and TM modes, field patterns, TEM mode of propagation.
UNIT 2: WAVEGUIDE COMPONENTS: Scattering matrix representation of networks.
Rectangular cavity and circular cavity resonators. Waveguide Tees, Magic Tees. Hybrid
rings. Waveguide corners, Bends and twists. Directional couplers, Circulators and
isolators.
UNIT 3: KLYSTRONS: Limitation of conventional vacuum tubes, Construction and
operation of two cavity & multicavity klystrons. Velocity modulation and electron
bunching (analytical treatment), Applegate diagram and applications of two cavity
klystrons. Construction, working and operation of Reflex klystron. Applications and
practical considerations. Velocity modulation, power output and frequency
characteristics of a Reflex klystron. Electron admittance.
UNIT 4: TRAVELLING WAVE TUBES (TWT): Construction, operation and practical
consideration of helix type TWT. Introduction to CW power, pulsed dual mode TWT.
Coupled cavity TWT. Applications of TWT.
UNIT 5: MAGNETRON: Types of Magnetron. Construction, operation, analysis and
practical consideration of cavity or travelling wave magnetron. Introduction to coaxial,
frequency angle and voltage tunable magnetrons. Backward cross field oscillator,
Forward wave cross field amplifier.
