The amount of time you spend doing your job compared with the amount of time you spend with your family and doing things you enjoy.
It can be difficult to get the right work-life balance. A comfortable state of equilibrium achieved between an employee’s primary priorities of their employment position and their private lifestyle. Most psychologists would agree that the demands of an employee’s career should not overwhelm the individual’s ability to enjoy a satisfying personal life outside of the business environment.
The term suggests to me that one must wait until the end of his workday, week or even career to really start ‘living’. Ideally work should be so full of pleasure and meaning that it blends in beautifully with all aspects of our lives. However, it’s also a reality that many are overly absorbed in work, and, as a result, neglect other facets of life such as self-care, family, social-life and spirituality. In addition, we sometimes become unbalanced or burnt-out by “over-caring” about our work.
When I first began thinking about this topic, I found myself resisting the concept of work-life balance. The term suggests to me that one must wait until the end of his workday, week or even career to really start ‘living’. Ideally work should be so full of pleasure and meaning that it blends in beautifully with all aspects of our lives. However, it’s also a reality that many are overly absorbed in work, and, as a result, neglect other facets of life such as self-care, family, social-life and spirituality. • Think of a time that you experienced, unmanaged-empathy and a time when you experiencedtrue compassion. What feeling went along with each experience?
• Are you meeting goals for Achievement and Enjoyment on a daily basis in the following areas? Self, Family, Social Life, and Spirituality.
• In which areas are you strongest? Which need more attention?
• Do you generally see your strength in the area of achievement or enjoyment?
• Think of a person who you admire for their work-life balance. What characteristics and habits do they possess?
